Shiva and Shakti in the Chakra System

Shiva & Shakti

At the heart of the chakra system lies the sacred dance of Shiva and Shakti, the meeting of consciousness and energy within the body. This ancient yogic understanding offers a pathway into deeper awareness, where Kundalini energy, prana and subtle movement guide us back into balance. As we explore this relationship, we begin to reconnect with both the stillness that holds us and the life force that moves through us, opening the door to a more embodied and awakened way of being.

Understanding Shiva and Shakti

The relationship between Shiva and Shakti is at the core of the chakra system and yogic philosophy. Understanding this dynamic can deepen your awareness of energy, consciousness and the process of spiritual awakening.

Shakti represents the creative life force energy that flows through all living beings. In the human body, she is responsible for growth, movement and vitality. From the very beginning of life, it is Shakti that transforms a single fertilised cell into the complex structure of the body. She is the energy behind breath, sensation and the continuous flow of prana through the nadis.

Shiva, on the other hand, is pure consciousness. He is the silent awareness that observes, organises and gives direction to Shakti’s movement. Without Shiva, energy would exist without form or coherence. Without Shakti, consciousness would remain still and unexpressed.

Together, Shiva and Shakti represent two inseparable aspects of one unified reality. This balance between energy and awareness, movement and stillness, is reflected throughout the chakra system.

As the body develops, much of Shakti’s full power becomes dormant. In yogic teachings, this energy is said to rest at the base of the spine in the root chakra, coiled like a serpent. While most of this energy remains latent, a portion continues to circulate as prana, sustaining the body and supporting everyday function.

At the same time, our connection to higher consciousness becomes less pronounced. As we grow, awareness tends to shift outward, and Shiva consciousness becomes centred in the crown chakra, often experienced only in subtle or fleeting ways.

What is Kundalini Shakti?

Kundalini Shakti refers to this dormant spiritual energy stored within the root chakra. It is considered a powerful force for transformation and awakening within the chakra system.

A simple way to understand the difference between prana and Kundalini energy is through the image of a candle. Prana is like the melted wax that feeds the flame, continuously moving and sustaining life. Kundalini, in contrast, is the solid wax, a reserve of untapped energy waiting to be activated.

While prana supports daily physical and energetic processes, Kundalini awakening initiates a deeper inner transformation.

When Kundalini energy awakens, it begins to rise through the spine, moving along the central energy channel and activating each chakra. This process can bring increased awareness, emotional release and a shift in perception. It is not something that can be forced or controlled, but rather something that unfolds naturally over time.

For some, this awakening may happen in brief moments. For others, it may unfold gradually over years or become an ongoing experience that reshapes their understanding of life.

As Kundalini Shakti rises, she works to clear energetic blockages and dissolve limiting patterns. Her movement supports the integration of body, mind and spirit, guiding the individual towards greater clarity and alignment.

The journey of Kundalini ultimately leads to the reunion of Shakti and Shiva, where energy and consciousness merge. This union represents a state of wholeness, where the separation between doing and being begins to dissolve.

What Does Kundalini Awakening Feel Like?

Kundalini awakening is experienced differently by each person. For some, it may feel like subtle waves of energy moving through the body. For others, it can bring emotional release, heightened awareness or moments of deep clarity.

Rather than something to chase or force, it is a process to be met with presence, grounding and care. Through practices such as breathwork, meditation and mindful movement, the body becomes a safe space for this energy to unfold naturally.
