Mūlādhāra Symbol – The Five Petal Lotus
The Root Chakra, known in Sanskrit as Muladhara, is the first energy centre in the chakra system and forms the foundation of our entire energetic structure. Located at the base of the spine, it is the grounding point from which all other chakras develop and expand.
This chakra represents our most primal sense of safety, survival, and stability. It governs our connection to the physical body, the Earth, and our basic needs such as food, shelter, security, and belonging.
Within this energy centre lies Kundalini Shakti, the dormant life force energy that resides at the base of the spine. When awakened through practice and awareness, this energy moves upward through the chakras, supporting transformation and spiritual growth.
If you are new to the chakra system, you may wish to read my blog The Chakras Explained. before continuing.
What Is the Root Chakra?
The Root Chakra is the first point of energetic connection to the physical world. It governs survival instincts, grounding, and our relationship with the body and environment.
It is associated with the sense of smell and influences our most instinctive responses, including fight, flight, and freeze reactions.
This chakra is deeply connected to our sense of safety. When balanced, we feel secure in ourselves and life. When imbalanced, we may feel anxious, disconnected, or unstable.
Within yogic philosophy, the Root Chakra is also closely connected to the dormant feminine energy known as Kundalini Shakti, which rests at the base of the spine until awakened through conscious practice. You can explore this further in my blog on Shiva and Shakti – The Dance of Consciousness and Energy.

- connected to nature and body
- calm and resilient
A healthy Root Chakra provides the foundation for all other chakras to function harmoniously.
Imbalanced Root Chakra
When this chakra is out of balance, we may experience both emotional and physical symptoms.
Emotional symptoms:
- anxiety and fear
- insecurity
- disconnection from the body
- lack of trust
- depression or low mood
- feeling unstable or lost
- addiction patterns
- chronic worry
Physical symptoms:
- lower back pain
- constipation or digestive issues
- fatigue
- leg or knee problems
- immune system weakness
- circulation issues
- reproductive challenges
Imbalance often reflects a lack of grounding, safety, or connection to the present moment.
Root Chakra and Grounding Energy
The Root Chakra is our direct connection to Earth energy. When we feel overwhelmed or scattered, grounding practices help bring awareness back into the body.
Simple grounding techniques include:
- walking barefoot on natural ground
- spending time in nature
- slow breathing into the belly
- touching or holding natural materials
- mindful movement
These practices help regulate the nervous system and restore balance.
Yoga for the Root Chakra
Grounding yoga postures help stabilise both the body and mind. These poses encourage presence, strength, and connection to Earth.
Root Chakra Yoga Poses
- Mountain Pose (Tadasana)
- Tree Pose (Vrikshasana)
- Forward Fold (Uttanasana)
- Warrior II (Virabhadrasana II)
- Malasana (Yogic Squat)

Practising slowly and mindfully is key. Focus on feeling supported by the ground beneath you.

Root Chakra Yoga Sequence
I recorded this Root Chakra practice in the peaceful Danish countryside near the town of Ølstykke during the height of autumn. Surrounded by golden leaves and open fields, I felt deeply drawn to sit directly on the Earth and practise in stillness and simplicity. The forest floor became a natural mat beneath me while the soft autumn light warmed the space around us.
This grounding sequence includes steady, supportive postures, gentle breath awareness, the practice of Moola Bandha, and a short closing meditation to help reconnect you to the body and the stabilising energy of the Earth element.
As you move through the practice, allow yourself to slow down. Soften any sense of pressure or performance and simply focus on feeling supported by the ground beneath you. Breathe deeply, move mindfully, and give yourself permission to fully arrive in the present moment.
If you feel disconnected, emotionally overwhelmed, or energetically depleted, my Chakra Massage Sessions combine bodywork, energy healing, breath, and grounding practices to help restore balance throughout the chakra system.
Moola Bandha – Root Lock Practice
Moola Bandha is an energetic lock used in yoga to activate and stabilise the Root Chakra. It helps direct the energy upward through the central channel of the body.
This practice strengthens awareness of the pelvic floor and supports energetic grounding.
Due to its subtle intensity, it should always be practised gently and mindfully.
Root Chakra Breathwork
Breathwork helps calm the nervous system and restore a sense of safety.
A simple grounding breath practice includes:
- slow inhalations into the belly
- soft exhalations releasing tension
- awareness of the body’s connection to the ground
This helps regulate stress and reconnect awareness to the present moment.
Root Chakra Foods
The Root Chakra is nourished by grounding, earthy foods.
Supportive foods include:
- root vegetables (carrots, beetroot, potatoes)
- red fruits (apples, strawberries, cherries)
- protein-rich foods (beans, eggs, tofu)
- warming, nourishing meals
- iron-rich foods
Eating slowly and mindfully enhances grounding and presence.
Beetroot & Goat’s Cheese Tart
Beetroot has an earthy sweet flavour, a vibrant colour and a grounding energy. This makes it the perfect ingredient to use in your Autumn & Winter dishes…
Try this tart for dinner- it combines flaky buttery puff pastry, creamy goat cheese and bold rosemary. It’s the perfect warm, comforting dish for those chilly autumn evenings. Enjoy!

Grounding Practices to Balance Muladhara
To reconnect with the Root Chakra, spend time engaging in activities that help you feel present, supported, and connected to the Earth. Nature itself is deeply healing for Muladhara, so simple practices such as walking barefoot on grass, sitting beneath a tree, gardening, or lying on the ground can have a powerful grounding effect on the body and nervous system.
Water can also help restore balance and calm. Swimming in natural water, taking a warm bath, or even mindfully washing your face and hands can bring you back into connection with the present moment and your physical body.
Nourishing yourself with warming, earthy foods such as root vegetables can further support grounding and stability.
You may also wish to explore some of the following practices:
- move your body through yoga, walking, dance, or exercise
- meditate while focusing on your connection to the ground beneath you
- create safety and calm within your home environment
- give and receive loving touch and supportive connection
- practise self-reliance and healthy routines
- wear or surround yourself with the colour red
- eat grounding red foods such as beetroot, cherries, apples, and strawberries
- chant the seed mantra LAM
- rest, massage, or care for your feet
Often, the simplest practices are the most powerful. Slowing down, breathing deeply, and reconnecting to the body can gently bring the Root Chakra back into balance.
Once the Root Chakra begins to stabilise, energy naturally rises into the Sacral Chakra, the centre of creativity, emotions, sensuality, and flow. Continue reading in Sacral Chakra – The Seat of Creativity.
