Swadishthana Symbol – The Six Petal Lotus

The Sacral Chakra is the second major energy centre in the body and governs creativity, emotions, sensuality, pleasure, and connection. In Sanskrit, this chakra is known as Swadhisthana, meaning “one’s own dwelling place,” and it is associated with the water element. Like water, its energy moves through flow, adaptability, softness, and emotional expression.

Located a few inches below the navel in the lower belly, the Sacral Chakra influences the way we experience intimacy, joy, relationships, creativity, and feeling itself. While the Root Chakra creates stability and survival, the Sacral Chakra invites movement, expansion, and emotional aliveness. It teaches us how to feel, connect, create, and experience pleasure in a healthy and balanced way.

When this energy centre is open and balanced, we tend to feel emotionally fluid, inspired, sensual, playful, and connected to life. However, when blocked or overactive, we may experience emotional instability, numbness, addictive tendencies, fear of change, or creative stagnation.

If you are unfamiliar with the concept of the Chakras you may wish to read my blog The Chakras Explained.

What Does the Sacral Chakra Represent?

The Sacral Chakra sits in the lower abdomen, approximately three inches below the navel. Energetically, it governs the emotional body and our ability to experience life through feeling rather than control.

This chakra is connected to:

  • emotions and emotional expression
  • sensuality and sexuality
  • pleasure and enjoyment
  • creativity and inspiration
  • relationships and intimacy
  • adaptability and flow

Because it is linked to the water element, the Sacral Chakra thrives through movement, softness, and fluidity. It reminds us that life is constantly changing and that growth often requires surrender rather than rigidity.

This energy centre also influences the way we relate to others. Through connection, attraction, intimacy, and emotional exchange, we begin shaping our identity and understanding ourselves more deeply.

Signs of a Balanced Sacral Chakra

When the Sacral Chakra is balanced, we often experience:

  • creativity and inspiration
  • healthy emotional expression
  • sensuality and pleasure
  • emotional fluidity
  • openness to change
  • healthy intimacy and relationships
  • playfulness and joy
  • passion for life

A balanced second chakra allows us to enjoy life without becoming consumed by attachment or emotional overwhelm. We feel connected to ourselves while remaining open to others.

Symptoms of Sacral Chakra Imbalance

When this chakra becomes blocked, depleted, or excessive, emotional and physical imbalances can arise.

Emotional & Energetic Symptoms

  • emotional instability
  • dependency or co-dependency
  • fear of change
  • creative block
  • numbness or emotional suppression
  • addictive or compulsive behaviours
  • overindulgence in pleasure
  • difficulty experiencing intimacy
  • low libido or excessive sexual obsession
  • feeling disconnected from the body

Physical Symptoms

  • lower back pain
  • reproductive issues
  • menstrual imbalances
  • kidney or bladder issues
  • hip tightness
  • low energy
  • digestive discomfort
  • hormonal imbalance

Because emotions are deeply connected to the body, unresolved feelings can often become stored physically, particularly in the hips and pelvis.

The lower abdomen is the energetic location of the Sacral Chakra (Swadishthana)

Emotions Stored in the Hips

You may have heard the phrase: “The hips store emotions.” While this may sound symbolic, many people experience emotional release during deep hip-opening practices.

When we feel fear, stress, sadness, or threat, the body instinctively contracts. We tighten around the pelvis, curl inward, and brace ourselves for protection. Over time, if emotions are not fully processed, the tension can remain held within the muscles and connective tissues of the body.

This is why hip-opening yoga practices can sometimes trigger unexpected emotional responses. Through movement, breath, and awareness, the body begins releasing layers of stored tension and protective holding patterns.

Rather than forcing release, the practice invites softness, patience, and curiosity.

Yoga for the Sacral Chakra

The Sacral Chakra responds beautifully to fluid, creative movement. Instead of rigid perfection or over-structuring the practice, this chakra benefits from freedom, exploration, and transitions that encourage flow.

Dynamic movement helps awaken the water element within the body while encouraging emotional release and energetic circulation.

Sacral Chakra Yoga Sequence

I recorded this Sacral Chakra flow shortly after returning to London in 2021. Interestingly, the warm orange tones of the room naturally reflected the energy of Swadhisthana and inspired the practice itself.

The sequence focuses on hip opening, fluid transitions, sensual movement, and reconnecting to the body through softness rather than force. Towards the end, I guide an underwater visualisation meditation inspired by the water element of the second chakra.

Allow yourself to move intuitively, breathe deeply, and reconnect with the joy of movement.

Sacral Chakra Foods

The Sacral Chakra thrives on nourishing, hydrating, and sensual foods.

Because this chakra is associated with the water element, hydration becomes especially important. Fresh fruits, healthy fats, warm nourishing meals, and foods rich in colour all support this energy centre.

Foods That Support the Sacral Chakra

  • oranges
  • mango
  • papaya
  • pumpkin
  • sweet potato
  • carrots
  • peaches
  • apricots
  • coconut
  • dark chocolate
  • nuts and seeds
  • seafood
  • herbal teas
  • water-rich fruits

Healthy fats also support hormonal balance and reproductive health, both strongly connected to this chakra.

Beyond nutrition itself, the Sacral Chakra invites us to enjoy food sensually and mindfully. Slow down, savour flavours, and reconnect to pleasure without guilt.

Papaya & Banana Smoothie Bowl

This nourishing smoothie bowl was inspired by a beautiful café we visited in Pai, Thailand. In our search for healthy & fulfilling breakfast we came across Bom Bowls. And we couldn’t stay away from this scruptious goodness! Hearty, delicious, fruit based breakfast bowls that will make you want more. Talk about sensuality in food! It quickly became one of my favourite sacral chakra breakfasts due to its vibrant colour, creamy texture, and naturally sweet flavour.

You will need:

  • 1 cup ripe papaya
  • 1 banana
  • 2–3 tbsp coconut milk
  • 1 tbsp smooth peanut butter

Blend until smooth and decorate with granola, chia seeds, coconut flakes, or papaya seeds.

Simple, colourful, nourishing, and deeply satisfying.

The inspiration for this recipe came after James and I visited Pai – a beautiful mountain village in the north of Thailand. In our search for healthy & fulfilling breakfast we came across Bom Bowls. And we couldn’t stay away from this scruptious goodness! Hearty, delicious, fruit based breakfast bowls that will make you want more. Talk about sensuality in food!

You will need:

  • a cup of peeled, chopped, deseeded ripe papaya
  • one peeled and chopped banana
  • 2-3 tablespoons of coconut milk (or any other plant milk)
  • 1 tablespoon of smooth peanut butter

Preparation:

Simple! Pour all the above in your smoothie maker, stir until you get a nice smooth consistency adding more liquid if required. Decorate to your taste. I used my home made granola, desiccated coconut & chia seeds. You can retain some of the papaya seeds for decoration too – they are nice and peppery and totally edible! Bon appetite!

Reconnect With Creativity

The Sacral Chakra flourishes when we allow ourselves to create freely.

Creativity does not only mean painting or dancing. It can be expressed through cooking, movement, gardening, music, writing, conversation, or simply allowing yourself to experience life more fully.

To support your second chakra:

  • dance freely
  • spend time near water
  • create art
  • sing or play music
  • receive massage or bodywork
  • wear orange tones
  • light candles and create beauty around you
  • reconnect with sensuality and touch
  • explore playful movement

Above all, allow yourself to enjoy life without overthinking every experience.

Keep Your Creative Energy Alive

The Sacral Chakra reminds us that life is meant to be felt, experienced, and moved through rather than controlled.

When we suppress emotion, disconnect from pleasure, or become afraid of change, this energy centre gradually contracts. However, when we allow movement, creativity, intimacy, softness, and emotional honesty back into our lives, we reconnect with vitality and flow.

Above all, remember that sensitivity is not weakness. Feeling deeply is part of being fully alive.

Allow yourself to move.
Allow yourself to create.
Allow yourself to feel.
