Speak, Listen & Express Your Inner Truth
The Throat Chakra, or Vishuddha, is the fifth energy centre and the bridge between the heart and the mind. Located at the throat, it governs communication, self-expression and truth.
In Sanskrit, Vishuddha means “especially pure.” This reflects the essence of this chakra. The ability to express yourself clearly, honestly and with integrity.
When this centre is balanced, your voice flows with ease. You speak your truth, listen deeply, and communicate in a way that feels aligned and authentic.
When it’s blocked or overactive, communication becomes strained. You may hold back, over-express, or struggle to find your voice at all.
If you’re new to the chakra system, you may want to start with The Chakras Explained for a full overview.

Vishuddha Signs Of Balance
When the Throat Chakra is in balance, we express ourselves easily and more authentically. Similarly, when communicating with others we are able to listen with true compassion.
A balanced throat chakra helps to set us free from the fear of judgement or need for approval from others. Furthermore, the energy of the fifth chakra helps us to embrace our originality and unique individual experiences in the world. It connects us to the concept of truth as it is associated with purity.

Yoga & Practices for the Throat Chakra
The Throat Chakra responds beautifully to movement, breath and sound.
Yoga Focus
Practices that gently open and close the throat space help stimulate this energy centre.
Recommended poses:
- Sukhasana Neck Side Stretch (Easy Pose Neck Stretch)
- Bitilasana Marjaryasana (Cat Cow)
- Uttana Shishosana (Puppy Pose)
- Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand)
- Halasana (Plough Pose)
- Matsyasana (Fish Pose)
These movements release tension in the neck and shoulders while creating space for energy and expression to flow.
Throat Chakra Yoga Practice
This sequence brings together movement, breath and sound to activate your voice and release tension in the throat and chest.
Expect a gentle, intuitive flow designed to:
- open the throat and shoulders
- warm the vocal channel
- reconnect you with your inner voice
Let it be less about performance and more about feeling.
If you’d like to be guided through these practices in a more personalised way, you can explore my 1:1 sessions where we work with breath, movement and energy in a way that’s tailored to you.
Breathwork & Sound
Lion’s Breath (Simhasana)
A powerful practice for releasing blocked energy:
- Inhale deeply
- Exhale with an open mouth, tongue extended, making sound
This clears tension, stimulates the throat and encourages expression.
Bija Mantra: HAM
Each chakra is linked to a sound vibration. For the Throat Chakra, this is HAM.
Chant slowly on the exhale and feel the vibration in your throat.
Even a few minutes can help release tension and open expression.
If chanting feels unfamiliar, start quietly or internally. Over time, the voice softens and opens naturally.
Chakra balancing practices are also woven into my healing sessions, where we work more deeply with the body, nervous system and subtle energy.
Food & Lifestyle for the Throat Chakra
As we move into the upper chakras, nourishment becomes lighter and more subtle.
Supportive Foods
- Blue & purple fruits: blueberries, blackberries, grapes
- Hydrating liquids: herbal teas, lemon water, coconut water
- Tree-grown fruits: apples, pears (symbolising natural expression)
Warm teas with honey or soothing herbs can be especially supportive for the throat.
You may also find it supportive to explore how awareness expands through the upper chakras, particularly the Third Eye Chakra, where intuition and perception deepen.
Bonus: Nourishing Smoothie Recipe
A simple, grounding way to support your Throat Chakra through nourishment.
Blueberry Coconut Smoothie Bowl
- blueberries
- coconut cream
- desiccated coconut
- optional blackberries or dragon fruit
Blend into a creamy consistency and enjoy slowly, bringing awareness to taste and sensation.

Essential Oils
Essential oils can contribute to all the above practices to help balance your Throat Chakra. They invigorate this energy centre through the aroma inhaled via your nasal passages. Use these oils in small amounts on your wrists, under your nose, on your third eye or simply in oil burners.
Here are some essential oils for the Throat Chakra:
Frankincense
Frankincense is beneficial in cases of underactive thyroid.
Jasmine
Jasmine is also known as one of the throat chakra essential oils for its effect on the voice. It is used in cases of hoarse voice.
Sage
Sage is a master healer. For throat chakra issues, this oil is beneficial to heal gum disease.
Peppermint
This fragrant and fresh aroma invigorates creativity and self-expression.
The Art of Speaking Authentically
For many of us, this chakra brings challenge.
We’ve learned to filter, soften or hide our truth. Over time, this creates distance from ourselves.
Working with the Throat Chakra is not about speaking more. It’s about speaking truthfully, consciously and with presence.
Your voice doesn’t need to be loud. It needs to be real.
And that begins with listening inward.
A Journey Back to Your Voice
The path back to authentic expression takes time.
But with practice, something shifts.
There is more ease, more honesty, more freedom.
And from that place, communication becomes not just expression
but connection.
If this is an area you feel drawn to explore more deeply, I offer private sessions and bespoke practices designed to help you reconnect with your voice, your body and your inner clarity.
